William J. Steinbach, MD
Professor of Pediatrics
Professor in Molecular Genetics & Microbiology
Principal Investigator
Dr. William Steinbach completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame and then graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency training at Stanford University where he was named one of only 12 fellows from all pediatric disciplines in the NIH Pediatric Scientist Development Program. After Stanford, he completed his pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at Duke University. He has been at Duke as a faculty member in Pediatrics as well as Molecular Genetics & Microbiology since 2004 where he now directs the Aspergillus Pathogenesis Laboratory. [Read full bio]
Praveen R. Juvvadi, PhD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Praveen and Bill have been a collaborative scientific team since 2008. Praveen received a PhD in Biochemistry from Osmania University, India, and postdoctoral training in fungal genetics and biology at the University of Tokyo and University of Sevilla. Praveen's research interests focus on understanding the roles for calcineurin control over hyphal growth and septation and its interactants in Aspergillus fumigatus.
Keats Shwab, PhD
Post-Doctoral Research Associate
Former Tri-I MMPTP Fellow
Keats received his PhD in microbiology from the University of Tennessee in 2015 and is currently investigating the role played by protein kinase A-regulated pathways in growth, stress adaptation, and virulence of A. fumigatus. Keats has been with the lab team since 2015.
John Allen IV, BS
Research Technician II
Johnny has a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a minor in Chemistry from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Along with his supporting role towards meeting the lab's goals, Johnny also conducts in-vivo experiments using our CD1 mouse model strain looking at how different strains of Aspergillus fumigatus spores affect the mouse model intranasally and/or inhalationally. Johnny has been with the lab since March of 2019.
Shareef Shaheen, BS
Research Technician
Shareef has a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Washington. Alongside supporting the lab's needs, he is also investigating multidrug resistance mechanisms linked to protein kinase A-regulation pathways in Aspergillus fumigatus, and the utility of candidate antifungals and fungal diagnostics. Shareef has been part of the team since June 2019.
D. Chris Cole, BS
Research Technician II
Chris has a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from NC State University and performs molecular genetics and characterization, in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing, and other studies of invasive aspergillosis. Chris joined the lab team in October 2016.
